When buying an electric fireplace, there are a lot of factors you should look out for including; type, heating capability, flame effects, settings, size, safety features, energy efficiency, build quality and cost. Ultimately, you should ensure it fits your space, suits your style and has the features you need.

Electric fires can effectively heat up a room, providing immediate warmth with a range of heat settings. They are ideal for heating smaller spaces or as a supplementary heat source in larger rooms. However, their efficiency in heating large spaces may vary compared to central heating.

Electric fires vary in electricity use. The heating function uses more than the LED flame effect, but usually has adjustable settings, making the fire more efficient and economical. To estimate usage, multiply wattage by hours e.g. a 1kW fire burning for 2 hours equals 2kWh. In terms of efficiency, they are 100% efficient, unlike other means of heating.

While electricity is currently more expensive than gas, electric fires can still work out cheaper for small spaces or short-term use. Electric fires offer warmth to the immediate space, while central heating heats the whole house. Therefore, electric fires can be cheaper to run than central heating for localised warmth.

An electric fire can be cheaper to run than a gas fire due to higher energy efficiency. They also cost less to install. Electric fires convert almost all energy into heat, whereas gas fires lose some energy through combustion and venting. However, the cost-effectiveness also depends on local electricity and gas prices.

Whether or not you should replace your gas fire with an electric fire depends on your individual needs and preferences. However, electric fires are generally more energy efficient, require less maintenance and are easy to install. They are also safer due to the absence of gas.

Installing an electric fire is simpler than it appears. All you need is a standard plug socket and a space to place your new electric fireplace. While you may need some basic DIY skills (depending on the type of installation), no additional wiring is needed, therefore an electrician isn't required.
