While some traditional stoves are multi-fuel, allowing for both wood and coal burning, not all wood-burning stoves are suitable for coal. Coal burns at a higher temperature and can cause damage to a stove not designed for it. If you intend to use coal, ensure your stove is classified as multi-fuel, with a suitable grate and ash pan for proper combustion and safety.

Cast iron stoves require regular maintenance to prevent rust and keep them looking their best. To maintain its finish, it's important to keep the stove dry and occasionally apply stove polish or paint designed for high temperatures. Regularly clean the stove surfaces, remove ash, and check that the door seals are intact to maintain both appearance and performance.

However, newer traditional-style stoves are often eco-designed and DEFRA-approved to comply with current regulations, incorporating features like air wash systems and cleaner combustion technologies which maximise efficiency, too.
